As we age, our skin becomes susceptible to elements that can cause damage and premature aging. Conditions such as harsh environmental elements, chemicals and additives in our personal care products, as well as a lack of sleep and a poor diet can all contribute to premature aging and skin damage. Millions of people are now looking for ways to combat the signs of skin aging. On such method that has become very popular is the use of Botox injections.

Botox injections are when a bacterium Clostridium botulinum is injected into the muscle of the face that controls lines in the forehead and the fine lines around the eyes. The botox tighten muscles thereby removing wrinkles and fine lines. The results are smoother skin with no wrinkles or lines and a younger looking appearance. A local anesthetic is not usually used because the pain is minimal. Allergic reactions do not often appear with the use of Botox.

Side effects of botox injections are very minimal. There are a few instances of a bit of swelling and redness around the injection site and there is no recovery time. One can go back to their regular routine right after having the injection. Some individuals have reported a small amount of bruising, nausea, and headaches after an injection but they go away quite quickly.

The effects of botox injections are not permanent so repeated injections are often carried out. One injection can last from 3 to 4 months. Botox injections are an FDA approved treatment for the removal or reduction of wrinkles and ‘frown’ lines. It is a much more affordable method of fighting skin aging than surgery, and it is a very effective treatment for laugh lines and crow’s feet.

Botox injections are a quick procedure which only takes about 10 minutes. The muscles start to relax within 1 to 3 days of the treatment. So that is when one may start seeing the results. Botox injections are not recommended for pregnant mothers, if there is an infection, and people with neuromuscular conditions. Botox is a drug that should only be administered by qualified medical professionals. Botox parties are popular, but it can be risky to have a novice inject you with a drug like botox.

We all want to slow the visible signs of aging. Many of us go to great lengths to reduce the negative effects. Our skin is one of the first places that start to show the visible signs of aging. As well, our lifestyle and harmful chemicals and pollutants in the environment and in products that we use daily, speeds up the signs of aging. The results are skin creases, wrinkles, crow’s feet, and fine lines. Taking care of our skin has become a natural part of our daily health routine. Botox injections have also become a popular way to fight the signs of aging. They allow one to effectively remove the visible signs of aging without surgery, and in a very short time. Botox injections are a great choice for people who want to slow the effects of aging quickly without a huge expense and major side effects.

For patients who do not wish surgery and are willing to settle for temporary results, neuromodulators and dermal fillers provide excellent alternatives to more invasive procedures. For some concerns, the temporary solutions do provide better treatment than the longer lasting but less effective surgical options. Neuromodulators and dermal fillers can not be used interchangeably though. Each is good for its own uses.

When a physician talks of dermal fillers, they are talking of a class of medications which is injected into the deep layer of skin, the dermis, which provides volume to the skin. These medications are used to soften facial wrinkles and depressions. There are several on the market in the United States though most are temporary lasting 6 months to a year (though individual results will vary). There is currently only one United States approved product for permanent dermal filling. In general, dermal fillers are good at correcting lines which are created at rest, not during muscle motion. This means that if you look in the mirror without smiling and see a line that you want to fix, a dermal filler may be for you.

Dermal fillers are best for lines and wrinkles which are present at rest. Dermal fillers have also been used for nonsurgical rhinoplasty and non-surgical facelift procedures.

Neuromodulators, on the other hand, work well for wrinkles and fine lines created by muscle motion. The currently approved US neuromodulators are based on different formulations of purified botulinum toxin. The injection temporarily paralyzes the muscle which causes the wrinkles that a patient is concerned with. Unfortunately, the medication is non-selective and when used incorrectly can produce untoward results. The effect generally lasts about 3 months though results are variable.

There are risks with both neuromodulators and dermal fillers. Consultation with a trained and experienced surgeon is always necessary before undergoing either of these treatments. Having a physician nearby in case of complication can be lifesaving.

D.J. Verret, MD is a facial plastic surgeon in the north Dallas, Texas suburb of Plano, Texas. For more information about non surgical facelift, non surgical rhinoplasty, or other facial rejuvenation procedures, call for a consultation 972.608.0100 or visit him on the web.

With all the hype about anti-aging and botox treatments and every other form of looking younger, you may ask yourself is cosmetic surgery for you. Most, if not all celebrities are going under the knife, or at least getting some kind of procedure like botox or other well known fillers. This in turn has the regular population following suit. Perhaps because of the mass media bringing all this information to our attention has much to do with it. Not to mention how everyone is struggling to keep up with the Jones’.

Moreover, it seems that there are new procedures available to us on a daily basis. Of course, the internet really opens the doors to all these cosmetic surgeries and other procedures aimed at keeping us youthful. With that said, there are many deciding factors that lie with each and all of them.

For one thing, are you in a financial position to undergo any type of cosmetic surgery? Looking great is wonderful, but at what price? Unfortunately, many people are not in a position to afford such extravagant “privileges”. Another thing that must be considered and is of utmost importance is the doctor who will be performing the operation. References are a must in these situations.

Other serious considerations must be given to the downtime involved. Can you afford the luxury of the recovery time that is required post operation? Will you have any help during this time? And finally, is surgery the only way you can achieve the results? Perhaps, for economic and downtime reasons, you may be able to benefit from other cosmetic procedures.

Your doctor/surgeon will be performing these other newer methods too, even though they may not be surgeries, such as the contour thread lift. This method gives the effect of a face lift without any recovery time. Here, a thread, with the help of a special syringe, is injected above the cheekbone.

The thread is pulled, thereby pulling the skin back, resulting in a smoother, younger face. It’s a brilliant procedure that can help hold off invasive surgery for much later. Of course it costs much less than a face lift and there is no need to take time off for recovery.

Whatever the case, know what you are getting yourself into, research everything that is related to the subject and get different opinions from different surgeons. Above all, ensure you have good references, perhaps from someone who has used this doctor before.

by A Nutt

Restylane and Hylaform are two new injections for smoothing wrinkles and laugh lines that are highly effective, give beautiful results, and are less invasive than many other injection treatments for wrinkles.

You’ve probably seen advertisements for Reestylane and Hylaform and how they will take years off of your face. You may wonder how they work and if they work.

The injections have fewer problems than other types of injections for smoothing wrinkles, and those who use them prefer their ease of use.

Other injections for sculpting and removing wrinkles are made from animal based products. By contrast, Restylane and Hylaform are created from non-animal, biodegradable substances.

The major ingredient in the two products is hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in our bodies, that provides fullness and volume to the skin. This natural base makes Restylane a favorite in the wrinkle removal field.

This is in direct contrast to Botox, which is a drug, not a natural product. Botox blocks the nerves from transmitting and relaxes the muscles under the nerves. Restylane, on the other hand, fills in folds and wrinkles with a natural filler.

The Restylane and Hylaform products have very few side effects and nearly no allergic reactions. With animal based injection, there is a high percentage of patients who have an allergic reaction to the products.

This reaction causes swelling, itching and redness, and embarrassment for the patient. However, these side effects are nearly all connected to the animal proteins in those products, and Restylane has none of those acids, so there is little to no incidence of allergic reactions.

In fact, with other products, patience have to go through and experimental prick and small injection to test for allergic reactions. With Restylane and Hylaform, that testing step is completely eliminated.

That means faster treatment for you, and faster results. Not only can you have the procedure early, but you’ll see the effects for a long time as well.

The effects of Restylane last up to six months, which means less frequent injections and more natural looking results. Eventually the acid is absorbed into the skin naturally so there is never a unnatural or unattractive look.

The treatments generally last only 20 or 30 minutes, and the process usually takes only one treatment to produce effective results.

There is generally no pain involved in the Restylane procedure. The ultra thin needles and technology involved mean minimal discomfort for the patient. This gentle treatment allows patients to return to work, school, and regular daily activities immediately, with little or no visible sign of swelling or redness, just beautiful skin and no wrinkles.

Despite the mildness of the treatment, you should avoid St. John’s Wort, high doses of Vitamin E supplements, aspirin and ibuprofen. These items may increase the incidents of bleeding at the site of the injection.

There is a small chance of facial cold sores, if a patient has had a problem with these in the past there is a small chance that the needle puncture could cause a recurrence.

Collagen is fundamental to skin?s elasticity. Naturally it is depleted as we age. This creates wrinkles and folds in the skin. Certain factors, such as smoking, too much sun exposure and genetics, can speed up this process. By replacing the collagen with dermal filler, one can once again look young and refreshed again.

Evolence is new dermal filler that can replace the collagen you?ve lost and give you smooth, natural looking contours. This procedure is unique because there is no down-time involved and results are seen almost immediately. The collagen then lasts for 6 months to a year, unlike many other types of filler, thusly avoiding costly repeat visits. There is minimal to no swelling or bruising from the entire process. There is no skin testing required to have the procedure done.

Some other benefits of Evolence over other collagen fillers are that it does not need to be refrigerated, making it easier to store. It does not contain anesthetic, unlike bovine based collagen. Evolence is porcine-based because pig skin is most like human tissue. This makes the collagen more durable, pliable and the skin softer. Instead of using chemicals, Evolence uses natural sugar to increase the durability. Evolence is also a less concentrated product than other fillers. Evolence is to be injected into the upper to mid dermis. This is where your smile lines are located, from the nose to the corners of the mouth.

This product is relatively new to the United States, but has found wild popularity in Canada, Europe, and Israel. Many dermatologists think that once truly discovered here, it will quickly surpass other collagen fillers because of its radical, lasting results. It was only just approved by the FDA in June of this year. This is truly a breakthrough in skincare.

The peel skin treatment, is a beauty treatment that has been used since the 1930′s for acne and wrinkle care and general improvement of the face. It’s helped many people reduce the damage caused to their skin as a result of scarring caused by acne as well as the effects of aging. The peel skin treatment is a six to nine day chemical method of gradually peeling the outer skin layers to reveal healthier (IPL), blemish and wrinkle-free skin layers underneath. It rejuvenates the skins appearance and helps to stimulate the lower layers of the skin to produce more healthier skin cells. It uses special chemicals that induce the outer layers of fine skin tissue to peel away evenly, a carefully controlled process that takes six to nine days to complete for optimum results.

While peel skin treatment used to be offered only in a doctor’s office, thanks to today’s inventions and less harmful chemicals, it can be done safely in the comfort of your own home. There are several excellent product lines available over the counter that can be used by anyone to dramatically improve the youthful glow of their skin. The skin peel can also be used effectively to remove such nuisances as age spots, freckles, and hyper pigmentation in the skin caused by sun damage or illness. If used over the prescribed six to nice days, the skin will peel evenly to reveal skin that is clear of these pigment issues.

The peel skin treatment is also useful to people who suffer from acne and blackheads, caused by clogged pores or toxic buildup in the skin. As the chemicals gently work on the layers of the skin, the pores are opened up, infectious oil, bacteria and toxins are expelled from the skin and the complexion is cleared. This is much less damaging than trying to squeeze the oil out of the skin or using other methods. The peel skin method leaves less noticeable scars and even improves the condition of existing acne scars or oversized pores. Skin is then free of marks and is restored to its former beauty.

Another advantage of using the skin peel method of improving the look of your skin is that it evens out the skin tones and reduces the affects of skin damage to the lower layers of the skin. Sometimes this damage can’t be seen right away, but over time it’s what causes wrinkles and discoloration to form. Using the skin peel, these damaged layers gradually work their way to the surface where they are sloughed off and new healthier skin layers can form. Using a skin peel followed by wearing proper sunscreen can slow down the aging process and preserve the younger skin underneath from further damage.

When used properly, the peel skin treatment is an effective means to improve the look and feel of your skin. Be sure to choose high quality products that are right for your skin type and consult with a knowledgeable skin care specialist before attempting to do this at home.

In recent years, laser treatment has become a popular choice for people wishing to remove unwanted hair. Laser treatments have been improved making treatment safer and much less discomforting. Lasers can be performed on all skin types and colors and they can be used on any area of the body that has excess hair.

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment contained in the hair follicle. Melanin is the pigment that causes the hair to be light or dark. People with light hair have less melanin so it is more difficult to remove hair. The hair follicles contain cells under the skin that cause the hair to grow. The laser heats up and vaporizes the follicle which damages and removes the hair

The following are several laser hair removal methods one should consider before undergoing treatment:

Ruby Laser: The Ruby Laser is the earliest hair removal method. It works well on light and fine hair. The method is less effective with people who have darker skin because of the larger amount of melanin that is present. As well, it is not recommended for people who require a large area of air to be removed. The red color at 694nm can be is effectively absorbed by the melanin.

Alexandrite Laser: The Alexandrite Laser is very effective at treating large area of the body containing excess hair. It is also popular with people who have fair skin. It is the one of the fastest methods of removing hair. When using the laser, a reddish light is created and carries a deep penetration rate. It produces a high repetition speed and it can cover up to an 18mm laser spot area on the skin. It can often take about 30 minutes or less to complete an alexandrite laser treatment of the whole back.

Diode Laser: The Diode Laser is one of the best methods of removing hair on dark skin. It is not very useful on lighter skin. It produces a long wavelength allowing for a more deep penetration of the pigment. The laser diode dispenses an invisible light at about 800 nm. It is effective on large areas of the skin. The repletion rate is fast allowing for a shorter treatment time.

Long Pulse Nd: Yag Laser: The Long Pulse Nd: Yag laser is effective on a number of skin types. However, it is more effective on darker skin. Larger areas can be treated because of the quick repetition rates.

Intense Pulsed Light Devices: Although not actually lasers, they are considered a laser equivalent. They use a method called selective photothermolysis to remove hair. They produce non-coherent light of many different wavelengths. The light energy has shorter wavelengths; therefore treatment of darker skin is less effective. They are also a bit more complicated to use.

Improvements in laser hair removal methods have resulted in an increased demand for the treatment. Before undergoing treatment, you need to know what it in involves and what kind of treatment will match your skin type. It is important to remember that you will have to have several treatments to achieve optimum results. If you are considering laser treatment as a getting rid of excess hair, you should consult with a laser treatment practitioner to get a better understanding of its benefits and what you need to know before going through the hair removal treatment.

In this society, the quest for the fountain of youth is as old as time itself. Because their potential effects are an approximation of what a fountain of youth could do, Botox injections are becoming increasingly popular. Many people elect to have Botox injections, a non-surgical procedure used by physicians to reduce wrinkles and facial lines, in an attempt to restore a youthful appearance.

These are economically-trying times. Whatever money we spend should be towards something, whether it is tangible or not, that has value. This also applies to Botox injections. Attractive as it sounds, becoming youthful again involves costs that one would surely want to look into. How much Botox injections cost should be taken into consideration, to see if it is cost-effective.

Your location is one of the factors that will determine Botox injections cost. In a rural area where the cost of living is relatively low, the cost of Botox treatments will also be relatively low. In urban areas where the cost of living is higher, the cost will be higher. Botox injections cost is directly influenced by the living standards in a particular area.

The qualifications of the medical practitioner who performs the procedure is another factor. The higher the level of expertise your consultant has, the higher the Botox injections cost will be. This is something that you should not want to stint on because a better doctor equals better results. You wouldnt want to go to a physician with less proficiency just because he charges less. Of course, you can go with the one who costs less if the competence of both is essentially the same.

One Botox vial is usually enough for four to five treatments. However, the contents must be used within a few hours of opening the vial and any unused portion must be discarded after the specified number of hours. This affects Botox injections cost because the price of the whole vial could be charged to you regardless of whether or not all the contents of the vial were used for your treatments.

The results of Botox treatments are not permanent. According to Botox manufacturer Allergan, the effects of Botox injections can last up to about four months. This would mean that you have to go back for treatments every three or four months to maintain the results. This is another factor that you should look into in determining your long term Botox injections cost.

There are discounts offered by practitioners. One must beware of these as discounts often mean lower quality as well. Look into what they have before you decide on making use of their services.

If you have decided that Botox treatment is a good option and also determined the best way of getting value for your money, then jump right in and say hello to a younger you.

The Night of Beauty seminar offers demonstrations of the latest, cutting edge non-surgical and surgical beauty enhancement procedures as well as a raffle for beauty enhancing procedures for participants. Recently developed technologies as well as innovative procedures using existing technologies are discussed and enjoyed with complimentary wine and cheese. Dr. Thomas Powers of Diva Aesthetics Medical Group, a pioneer in cosmetic laser medicine and inventor of the 20 Minute Face Lift, presents a live demonstration of Thermage and lectures on the effective use of Botox, Juvederm, Fraxel, Fotofacial, and Juvederm among other procedures used to reverse the visual effects of aging. An Expert in Thermage treatement, Dr. Powers has treated over 2,200 Thermage patients.

“What better way to learn about how to learn which procedure is right for you than a live demonstration followed by a seminar about the latest procedures available to enhance beauty?” says Dr. Powers. “Not only are we the leading experts in our field- able to help explain the different benefits for different procedures, but we offer our services at the lowest prices at our seminars and some attendees get procedures free of charge when we raffle them off.”

Discounted beauty enhancing procedures range from an $8.50 Botox unit price to a 35% price reduction on laser hair removal. At the beauty demonstration, raffles are held for free Botox, Juvederm, IPL and 50% off on Thermage. Seating is limited at these events and Diva Aesthetics Medical Group recommends booking advance reservations for their event at least a week prior to the seminars.

Dr. Powers was certified in advanced cosmetic laser procedures with Dr. Patrick Bitter, Jr. founder of the Fotofacial RF procedure. He completed training in Botox, and IPL with Dr. Jean Caruthers on the Luminis laser. He went on to serve as Medical Director for four laser skincare clinics in California. He is active in training health care professionals in aesthetic medicine. Dr. Powers limits his practice to only safe FDA approved, highly effective, low down time procedures such as laser hair removal, laser IPL fotofacial and body rejuvenation treatments, BOTOX, Restylane, and Radiance.

He has also developed the “20 minute face lift” a combination of Botox for upper face, and Cosmoplast for the lower face, cheek and lip. “Although you can get Botox and collagen just about anywhere these days, it’s the expertise, skill and placement that gives you the most natural, longest lasting result”, according to Dr. Powers, who is known for his 20 minute face lift. “I can make you look younger and more vibrant with the proper placement of Botox for the top portion of your face and a dermal filler to the bottom half to fill the lines and creases giving you a more youthful look in 20 minutes.

Dr. Powers is committed to staying on the educational forefront of cosmetic medicine, through his affiliation with numerous medical associations, including the American Association of Lasers in Medicine and Surgery, the International Association of Aesthetic Medicine, and the International Society of Cosmetic Laser Surgeons. Dr. Powers is also a member of the Botox Cosmetic Physicians Panel. Dr. Powers currently is the Medical Director for Diva Aesthetic Medical Group with three locations, in Westminster, Brea, and Hermosa Beach.

Phototricholysis, also known as photoepilation or light-based hair removal, is the process of removing hair using light at a preset wavelength which is delivered to the skin using a hand-held device. The purpose of the device is to generate heat or mechanical damage to the hair follicle. One method that is becoming a popular choice for people who wish to remove excess hair is Laser Hair Removal

How Laser Hair Removal Works Lasers emit a low-energy wavelength through the skin that is absorbed by melanin (dark pigment) which is located in the shaft of the hair follicle. Light is absorbed by dark matter, so the laser pulse can be absorbed by dark material in the skin. People who have experienced this form of hair removal report that the laser pulses feel like the snapping of a rubber band or warm pinpricks against the skin. The normal response is vaporization of the hair shaft which kills and removes the hair. Minor swelling and redness around the hair follicle will appear shortly after treatment. Since hair goes through cycles as it grows, it is usually necessary to undergo repeat treatments.

Different types of lasers may be used. The ruby, alexandrite, and diode were the first lasers approved for hair reduction. The intense pulsed light (IPL) systems are another method that is commonly used. Lasers with longer wavelengths, such as the NdYAG lasers, have the ability to treat darker skin types including African-American skin.

Laser hair removal Advantages There are a number of benefits to using laser treatment to remove unwanted hair. There are a number of people who have reported long-lasting hair removal and some who have reported permanent hair removal. Laser treatment is also considered safe with very few side effects. A few reported side effects have included: slight pain, swelling around the hair follicle, and redness and inflammation lasting one to three days. Some patients have experienced long-lasting hair removal or permanent hair reduction. This method is also considered safe when a professional has performed the procedure properly. It is very effective when used on large areas of excess hair growth. It has been shown that darker hair responds best to the laser because the pulse is absorbed by the dark elements.

Preparation for Treatment Patients who choose laser removal will consult with a Dermatologist. The Dermatologist will make an assessment that includes skin type, location of the hair, hair thickness, color of the hair, past hair removal methods, any skin conditions such as psoriasis or rosacea, and any abnormal tissue. Patients will also be required to give their medical history.

Number of Sessions The number of sessions depends on a variety of factors that can include: gender, area being treated, and hair texture. Coarse dark hair on light skin is much easier to treat. Finer hair and hair on darker skin is more difficult to treat. Normally, three or more treatments are required at each site to achieve optimum results.

Costs of Treatment Although laser hair removal can be expensive, the results make it well worth the cost of each session. Costs will depend on the area being treated, the physician performing the treatment, the number of treatments. It is advised that patients consult with a dermatologist who will help them understand the prices. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the national average cost for laser hair removal is $429.00.

Laser Hair Removal has become a common practice for people who want to remove unwanted hair. With the right knowledge and planning, your hair removing experience can be as normal as any other daily care routine
